Calling all interested Cytherans

  • (Particularly the new members around here)

Recently, there have been quite a few new members through here. To those new members, I again say welcome to the Cythera Web Board.

As some of you may know, things have been fairly slow around here recently, particularly in the area of TSs.

"TS" is an abbreviation for "Team Story."

This topic contains a few descriptions of Team Stories which I will quote here.

    ~vIsitor~:

"Forgive our elitism, but we Cytherians have our own set of vernacular terms. 'TS' is short for Team Story, the equivalent of a forum Role Playing Game; 'Chrons' are Chronicles, otherwise known as fan-fiction; the 'Tavern' is a Bar, not unlike the Boozarama in concept excepting its general orderliness and role as a precursor to Team Stories; and so on."

    Wizard:

"I imagine what Visitor means by that is that TS's are essentially Role Playing Games, only done online over the forums.

Myself, I just think of them as little stories that I get to write part of. TS's are basically stories where everyone takes part. We decide on a plot, start a story about it, and another person puts in the next post. Then another person makes the next post and so on. This way, everyone gets to have a part in directing and writing the story.

    Hope that helps :) "

    Selax:

"As has been stated, Team Stories are basically stories set in the land of Cythera (or at least sort of), in which everyone creates characters and helps write a story."

TSs have recently experienced a drought in participating members (as they do from time to time), so I am starting this topic to invite (and to encourage) any interested members (particularly any new ones) to join the next one and see what they think of them. :)

If you do wish to join the next TS, I encourage you to create a character and post any info on him or her in the Character Info Topic. Then, check out the The Alraeican Tavern and wait for the next TS to start. (Note: none of these steps are really required: they are just a general guide, although posting in the Character Info topic is very helpful for all other participating members.) If you wish, you may also feel free to create your character and join the TS after it is started.

There is some hope that the next TS will be started sometime next weekend.

  • I am, as always, ready to participate. The trouble is finding other members who have spare time.

  • Now that I am back, I can participate, but I will have to kill someone first.

    Suicide is strongly discouraged.

    genocide, however, is fully encouraged.

  • So, uh, are you two in, or are you just cracking jokes at our expense? We would rather appreciate the contribution of your talents in this particular endeavor.

both. i'm in if i can crack jokes at your expense. ;)

in all seriousness, i won't be joining a TS any time soon. i'm going through a number of major upheavals in life right now and i don't have the time or dedication to contribute at a meaningful level.

  • Deja vu, could have sworn I already posted in this topic say "Yeah, I'm in." maybe it was a different topic...

  • I like participating in RPs, but you guys seems to be a bit more organized than anything I've ever been a part of.

Supposedly there's this set of "rules" to Rping, and anytime I tried joining in one of the RPs that was into that I
had a bunch of people yelling "NOOB!!!!" at me, practically chasing me out with sticks -.-"

since then I've been very shy as to joining well structured RPs (obviously not everyone is that elitist) It's just the
trauma of the experiences or something I guess , :p

but if you don't have a problem with a "newbie" joining your ranks, I may give it a shot :)

what with my workload at school the only thing I could guarantee is at least one post per day

I'll just have to go and look over your past TSes and character profiles to see if it's even within my capabilities :p

    thanks for the offer :)

Doesn't Selax run a char-killing service? Of course, my char--Shanadar the Enforcer--would be pretty miffed if Selax's assassin--the 'Nexus Lord'--escaped him (again). Then again, I , as a person, wouldn't particularly mind.

Our RPs are typically only semi-structured, typically consisting of a premise and definite ending (such as the completion of an objective), but the intervening events and plot are often decided upon by the participants are they progress. However, we do maintain basic rules of etiquette and conduct, for the interest of preserving the enjoyment of all participating parties. We don't mean to sound elitist, but these things are around for the sake of enjoyment, and its no good if one or two people spoil everyone else's fun.

General rules include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:

    1. Don't Control or harm another person's character(s) without consent (and try to stay in-character when you do have consent).
    2. Don't God-mode (if the scylla tentacle hits you for 1d5 damage you will get hurt, sorry no excuses).
    3. Don't de-rail the plot (you are free to initiate sub-plots, but don't try become the center of attention).
    4. Use proper spelling & grammar (and, conversely, don't be a grammar nazi).
    5. Above all else, exercise the use of common sense (think before you post).

We tend to be fairly lenient with bending the rules (particularly if the plot benefits from such), but it does get tiresome if such ordinances are repeatedly broken. The best way to avoid breaking any rules is to regularly converse with the other players in the accompanying OOC (out of context) thread for the TS in question.

Despite all this, we would greatly appreciate your participation, especially taking into account your apparent role-playing experience. We were all newbies at one point, and the only way we learned to better ourselves was to participate. The best of us are still trying to improve upon our methods. Should you choose to join us, you would be most welcome.

Cythera TSs don't have very strict rules really, only a few general guidelines. For instance, it is not really required (but VERY helpful) to post Character Info.

I suppose the main thing is not to create overpowered characters (a syndrome from which I suffer: I've removed most of them but need to something with those remaining).

Most TSs (not all) start with a general idea (or plot if you wish) which everyone can (to some extent at least) modify and add twists to. Some, of course, are more structured.

I think things used to be freer in regards to using other's characters, but I could be wrong. If I use other's characters (and I can't even recall if I do), I tend to include an offer to edit...maybe I should just add it to my signature...

As ~vIsitor~ stated, you would be most welcome to join us. :)

I do indeed. My assassin (who has undergone major changes) is only one way of killing people though: it depends on what the person wants. For instance, I also had a character catch on fire and jump in a barrel of alcohol as a means of killing her.

Things now look much more favorable for starting another TS. 453 told me (over irc) that she will be joining, so please don't kill her character (as I don't think she plans on turning Retsy into a wraith or creating a new character).

    Participants now include:
    ~vIsitor~
    Selax
    Two Jacks
    Wizard
    CrazyChick
    Pippin3 (Probably that is)
    BreadWorldMercy453

(Let me know if I missed anyone please.)

By the way, I think that Wizard plans on starting this one.

MuseInYourHead, don't worry at all about rules or organization. :) We just write these stories for fun! The things that Visitor and Selax mentioned are merely general guidelines. We're not actually all that organized (we just decide who will start a TS and what it will be about in advance, the rest is pretty open).

I find it sad that you've become a little shy about trying to join a story such as this. Put any fears to rest, though. We will not call you a "noob" or even a "newbie." I dislike and virtually never use either term. My personal feeling towards "noob" calling is this: Everyone is new to something at one point in their life. Why on earth make it uncomfortable or hard for them to enjoy a new experience?

I just don't want anything to give you the impression that we are some rule-bound, elitist, highly-structured RPers. We're not. We won't chase you out with a stick. On the contrary, we would gladly have you.

So I warmly welcome you and any others interested to join our ranks so that we can all have a great time writing a brand new TS!

And to briefly address a couple of other things, I'm quite certain that you will find it within your capability. In fact, being able to put up one post a day is several posts more than most of us get done in a week.

And yes, Selax, I do plan on starting this one. I'm just waiting for the right moment, one when I have the time to write up on intro post. Tentatively, I'm thinking sometime this weekend.

Edit: Gasp BreadWorld and Crazy and Pippin 3 all returning! This is wonderful news! Now we just need to get Jeh, Avatara, and Kat. . .

  • No no No no! No one got me!
Not who to kill, I know who. Just how.
Although killing Wizard has its attractions... (hehe)

I saw Kat before, somewhere. I'm sure of it.

Mouse traps is how we do it in the underground. Ya'folla?

  • Thanks for being so nice and welcoming :)

I didn't think you guys were snooty or anything.
I was just expressing my feelings of intimidation rather :p

I'd like to try it out, but I'm wondering if anyone here has AIM or maybe they can just tell me in a post exactly what
the structure is for the character profiles and how the point system is done. I've never been in an RP where the characters
have skill points and stuff. And I'm uncertain as to how you go about fighting and such. In the past whenever I've fought it's
been pretty structureless. Basically you throw a punch and the other person decides if you hit or miss. This is where I got
yelled at by the others >.< They told me there was some rolling technique or some such and used numbers to determine whether
I hit them or not...and they were kind of godmoding, they just really didn't want me to get away with hitting them.
I'm glad there's no godmoding allowed here, as it is one of the things that annoys me most in RPing. And I'm usually a very average character with human abilities, so I wouldn't stand a chance, lol.

  • You're welcome :) .

We really don't have a set structure for Character Info, basically just give a general description of your character. If you want, you can look around at some of the characters already posted there and use whatever pattern you like best (for example, here is a character post of mine).

In addition, we don't have a point system or any kind of rolling system either. The main thing in fighting is just to use common sense, as ~vIsitor~ said :) . For fighting other characters, you'll probably want to coordinate it with the other member a bit. You probably don't want to end the whole fight in one post: give the other member a chance to post and see where things go from there.

As for communication, most TS discussion goes on here on the boards (before and during a TS) or on #cythera on irc. This topic gives detailed instructions on how to set up irc and join the #cythera channel, where from time to time you can find quite a few of the members hanging around.

  • If someone is willing to do something with one of my characters if I vanish, I'll join. I have no idea what will happen to me within the next time-period.

Then again, I think I could manage a post at least as often as Wizard did in the last TS ^_~

I'll join on these terms :\
