Slayer's Guide

  • Should it be moved to the webboard directly?

Poll: Slayer's Guide to Cythera (14 member(s) have cast votes)
Should Slayer's Guide be moved to a special topic on the webboard?
    Yes
    (12 votes [85.71%])
    Percentage of vote: 85.71%
    No
    (2 votes [14.29%])
    Percentage of vote: 14.29%

As mentioned in this topic, Slayer's Guide seems to be down again, and the only copy that I can find currently (not that I have looked very hard) is on archive.org.

It has occurred to me that the information from Slayer's Guide could in theory be transferred to a special topic on the webboard itself, lessening risk of losing access to it (however temporary that loss might be) and making it easier to access. (Naturally, a disclaimer warning that you should not use the Guide unless you want spoilers would be added.)

For example, the index to Slayer's Guide would be posted in the opening post. It would contain the customary links to sub-indexes which would be contained in other posts. The links in these sub-indexes would contain links to still other posts which would hold information on the sought object.

I am afraid that this method might lose the icons and pictures that Slayer's Guide has, but I am not certain that that would happen. To me, it still seems worth the price.

    So, thoughts? Opinions? Suggestions?

(Note: In making this topic, I do not mean to offend anyone who has helped host Slayer's Guide in the past. On the contrary, I thank all of you for efforts. I merely think that this method might be easier for all concerned.)

  • Perhaps ... although I will ask the host of the guide at the moment: and check why it is down.
I Will reply as soon as possible

You've been granted 50MB of attachment space you can upload, as long as you don't exceed 500K/post. I don't think too many of the pictures would be an issue, maybe just some of the pages with all the portraits, but I don't think excluding the portraits will prove overly detrimental to the guide's content.

  • I have an archive copy of the guide on my computer; I could send you that...

  • If it become a very big topic (in size) the you could just make it a sub forum for the Cythera forums, like the MASCOT sub forum froum for Ferazel.

  • I don't think it'd actually be made into a forum like MASCOT, especially since there still technically is the possibility of buying a Cythera hintbook. Worst-case seems to be make a topic for each major section, then a topic to serve as an index to others, and refer everyone to the index topic. But I don't think it'll be that large in size, especially if people aren't allowed to reply directly to the guide topic.

  • Sounds good to me. Even though there are sites out on the 'net where Slayer's Guide can still be found, I think that a local solution would be nice. Either that or a download optimised version, though that might be dubious.

  • By the way, I probably won't be able to get started on this until about a week from today (two tests next week), so I guess you could say that's when the poll ends :) .

In addition, as Avatara suggested, I don't intend to allow any direct replies to the Guide topic, both to keep it smaller and easier to use.

I think that maps could be uploaded (the link given by Jehezekel actually has all of the pictures and such, I think), but I was concerned about the little icons next to links, pictures of people, portraits, etc.

  • Hello,

I am currently living in a different state from the server, but upon further investigation I discovered that the server has recently been upgraded to a newer version of OS X, which resulted in the site coming down. I can't provide any indication of when it will be back up, but I will be back home again by this time next week to fix things personally.

Of course moving the guide to the boards or to somewhere more stable (although http://scrabab.com/cythera.htm has been running it for quite a while now without problems) would be best.

    Sorry for the down-time!

  • Ah, I see. Thank you for the update :) .

Good to see you around, by the way.

Thank you, and congratulations on becoming a moderator :). You have worked with a consistency of effort and skill that few could match to keep these boards running.

The server http://scrabab.com/cythera.htm is now up again, and hosting Slayer's website. While the site has changed very little from when Slayer sent it to me (I've added a couple of items, and that's it) I hope to have time to bring it more up to speed after my exams in a fortnight or so.

Don't hesitate to email me if you have any queries regarding the site!

  • Thanks :) .

  • dusk! It's nice to see you about :)

I voted yes because I believe it would be nice just to be able to check a special, pinned topic rather than having to research the link.

  • The vote seems to be overwhelmingly "Yes," so I'll get starting on this sometime in the next day or two.

    EDIT:
Oh wow...this is going to take a while  (and make my post count skyrocket it seems). I hadn't remembered the way that he has everything interlinked. I'm disinclined to add links yet. I'll handle that when I go back through to simplify matters.

Please, no one post in that topic!

    EDIT 2:
Whew, missions are done...except for the interlinking which will be a real monster. If anyone wants to help post sections of this, please let me know and I'll give you the template that I'm using.

This thing might grow into a real monster, if I keep doing things this way. I made a separate post for each mission, so that linking would work better.

    Any suggestions?

    EDIT 3:
Oh yes, I'm locking the topic to keep it ontrack. I'll unlock it when I work on it next.

  • It's great to see this thing coming together. If you'd like my help just let me know. Interlinking shouldn't to much trouble all you need to do is copy-paste the post link into a condensed URl thingy. Bigest chore will be actualy getting it all up there. It looks good though! :)

  • Actually, I'm referring to how Slayer interlinked the names.

Oh, and, thanks, Two Jacks :) . Given the difficulty that this might involve, it is very good to hear positive feedback.

By the way, I'm going to go ahead and combine a few of the skills into the same posts. For instance, all of the skills that Hadrian teaches will be put into one post to simplify posting the material.

If there are objections to this, I can always go back and change it to be how Slayer has it.

Does anyone object to this idea?

    EDIT:
    Skills are now up.

  • The skill thing is fine, better to keep it to one person, though I don't think it would work in any other category besides items (and then it would only work when people give you items, not places). Then again having all the rare items for one area might be helpful.

So progress will be, "All info up, Linkage, Fine tuning"? Will there be pictures also? Might also want to have a link to the actual Slayer's Guide, though it may be redundant...

What about adding to the guide? There have been some new things discovered in the land of Cythera, what with the tree of life and all, not to mention glitches and other easter eggs. Maybe even instructions and info on plug-ins.

Also might be a good idea to pin the guide down, and keep it locked. There's this topic to discuss it and if anyone ever has a question about it in the future a new topic wouldn't be so bad.

There's already a chronicle of the month section on the page, maybe we should update ours. How about a link to every TS or/and chronicle, thoiguh it's not really needed.

Most of the stuff I've talked about isn't really what the original page was about, so it doesn't have to be there at all, just ideas.

Can't wait to see the final version.

  • I do indeed plan on pinning the guide :) . I just hadn't yet because I hadn't finished it. It will also remain locked when I'm done with it.

It's funny that you should mention pictures because I had just been deciding what to about pages like this.

I can get the text info but not the graphics. My idea was to put up the text info and include (if possible) a screenshot of the page.

The downside to this is that would the pictures would be unavailable to non-members. I could also include a link to a screenshot in Wizard's photobucket account but that might be "overkill," so to speak.

I'm not quite certain what to do with maps yet.

  • I was going to suggest condensing all those one-two line skill descriptions into one post (that means you only need one link for skill training, for example), and the like - as a bunch of really short posts can lead to a lot of scrolling and makes your linking life difficult. Remember you can merge posts, you don't have to cut and delete everything.

As for the picture page, I'd just take a screenshot of it and post the screenshot. Does it really prevent you from seeing the picture if you're not a member?

    Edit: Apparently, yes it does.

  • There's always coding, though it may lag the loading process of the page: (img)http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e375/frog_prince_22/ArmourIndex.jpg

While I wait though, I think I'll enjoy some cheese.
