The Viper

  • (continued fromThe Scales)

The glass tubes trembled in Helena’s hands. Then, she released them. They fell to the ground; the alchemical vials shattered, and the reagents slowly bled out and seeped into the dirt.
Ctimene looked at the shards, her mouth open. “Fool!” she said.
Helena withdrew her still-trembling palm. She looked straight at Ctimene.
    “Now,” said Tauros, “Onward.”
“Yes,” Ctimene answered, looking away. “Nothing that can be done now.”

They continued up along the stream. Behind them, it babbled and meandered down to the plain and joined a larger river on its way out to the sea. Before them, it stretched up to the nearer-and-nearer mountain peak.
Wilamos had a lot to think about.
This was his third day on Chapelle’s trail. He was still sure that he was on the right path, but he hadn’t seen any signs recently. Was Chapelle headed for the end of the world? Did he want to escape too?
Behind Wilamos marched Tauros. Was Tauros happy to be free of his master? If Wilamos was Chapelle’s master, would Chapelle be happy to be free of him?
In front of Wilamos marched Helena. If she and Selena were like Wilamos and Chapelle—bound but opposite—then would Chapelle want to break that bond too?
In the rear was Ctimene. Wilamos didn’t want to think about blood so he didn’t.
A cry of pain from in front of Wilamos brought him back to the present. Helena fell to the ground, clutching her foot, and he thought he saw something slither off into the grass.
“It… it bit…” Helena said before falling unconscious.

  • Oh no, I hope Helena is okay! If she's unconscious, does that mean Selena will awaken, during the day? Will she melt in the sunlight?

I feel confident that Chapelle is going to take the void to goat-world, possibly to become the Goatgoat ^_ __^

Author’s rebuttal: if the moons are different, the stars probably are too, so treating the Earth Zodiac as meaningful at all probably doesn’t make sense.

(I guess I forgot to reply to this on the Wolflizard thread) I think Anisa did specify that the stars are different on Cythera, but seeing as constellations look almost nothing like what they're supposed to be, the Therans could have just assigned their images to whatever constellations they found in Cythera, right? : __D

One wonders why Helena dropped the vials. Was it merely because they were shaking or does she have some ulterior motive?

I have to admit that I enjoyed this line quite a bit.
