Ok. How do I get Aethon to join me? (I feel so stupid asking all these questions!)

No, not stupid, just new. I had lots of trouble with Aethon when I started.
You must complete "ask Halos about Comana" like this:
Cure the plague in Catamarca by getting the crystal under the judges house.
Talk to the judge, then talk to Propontis (the sick guy in the bed, who is now cured). He is the brother of Halos. Talk to his wife Mantinea (the woman saying "he must not die!")and ask her about "Darius" and "company".
Find Halos in Cademia. Find a bed and sleep until noon+1 hour. Talk to him and tell him "Propontis". Talk to him about "politics" and get information about Aethon. Go to Aethon and tell him "join". He'll join you. Then talk to Etocles, ask him "join". He'll refuse to make you a member of the guild, but Aethon will vouch for you. Pay the member's fee and then you are a member of the ratcatcher's guild and can buy special things and train in special skills, and Aethon is in your party.Hope it helps.

If you want to get Halos to talk to you at any time, get the persuasion skill. (Go to Slayer's page to see how, I don't quite remember)

I believe you have to have completed find Opheltius' murder weapon , check Slayer's site for more details.
If you don't (I think) Halos may not mention Aethon in his little speech(sp?).
